How to Use Your Mobile Phone Safely While Driving

Driving a car is such a normal, everyday activity that it is all too easy to lose sight of the fact that it is potentially very dangerous. With more cars on the road than ever and more distractions for drivers it has never been more important to pay attention to safety behind the wheel.
Mobile phones are a major contributor to traffic accidents, yet despite high profile publicity many motorists ignore the dangers. A mobile phone car kit can significantly reduce your risk of being involved in an accident and is a good investment  But there are other things you might consider too. Follow our tips and you will be going a long way to staying safe on the road.
1. Don't break the law
In most parts of Australia using a mobile phone without a hands-free kit while driving is illegal as well as dangerous. In some cases you may be liable for heavy fines or demerit points if you use a hand-held phone. Many people are making the pledge never to use a hand-held phone while driving. With a little planning you will find that most calls can be made before you start your journey or when you reach your destination. If a call is so urgent that it cannot wait, then surely it deserves your full attention, so find a place to pull over and park your car before dialing.
2. Leave unimportant calls until later
Most phone calls are inconsequential. Let your voice mail deal with anything that can wait until later. That is what it is for. When you reach your destination you can check your messages and return any calls you have received without compromising your safety.
3. Park before making a call
If you suspect that a call might be too important to wait until you reach your destination, then look for a safe and legal place to park. Once you are stationary and out of the way of any traffic, you can make the call before setting off again. If it is an incoming call don't rush to find a parking spot so that you can answer it. If it goes to voice mail you can always return the call straightaway.
4. Keep calm
If you suspect that a call will be highly emotionally charged, it is more important than ever to leave it until you have stopped driving. Let voice mail handle it. Emotional distractions significantly increase the chance of being involved in an accident. Whatever is going on in your life, it is not worth the risk.
5. Never send text messages
Never use your phone to send SMS text messages or look up information while driving. It is illegal, extremely dangerous and downright irresponsible. Moreover, it is completely unnecessary. If the text can't wait or you need to find that address right now, then pull over and find somewhere to park before checking your phone.
6. Use Bluetooth
If you do wish to be able to make and receive important calls while driving then the best thing you can do is invest in a Bluetooth hands free car kit. This will allow you to make and receive calls with the least possible impact on your safety. Even so, you should still be cautious and wherever possible leave calls until you are safely parked.
